I sat on the quay of the north lake with my bare feet in the water. I transmuted Claudus’s six warships and one armed cargo ship for myself. Like I had done the others, I gave these warships Riverton colors, flags, and sails. My cargo ship got Greyson colors, flags, and sails.

The ballistas I armed the cargo ship with were not as large as the ones on the warships, but they’d do the job. Oddly, it didn’t seem to tax me as much as transmuting the four earlier ones. I assumed it had something to do with my time joined with Em.

I boarded the lead warship and had the water move the ship out of the lake and into the river. I spelled the other six ships to follow me upriver. As we passed Wooten’s dock, I had the armed cargo ship dock there. I continued to moor the warships at the royal castle’s docks. This time they reacted quicker, and the crews swarmed their new warships, putting them into service.

My side of the bargain with Claudus complete, I levitated off the warship and flew back to my armed cargo ship. Wooten was dockside, having them tie her off to the docks. I landed on deck and appeared out of sight of the dock workers.

I stepped to the railing. “What do you think?” I asked, looking at Wooten.

“I like what you’ve added,” he answered.

I lowered the gangplank and went ashore. “Let’s get her crewed. She’s not making us any money sitting here.”

He smiled. “I’ve already sent for a crew. Breakfast?”

I nodded and followed him inside. As we ate, we talked. “How many ships can you crew?” I asked.

He thought a moment, chewing his food. “Five, right now. How many ships do we have?”

I smiled. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you. I’ll just send ships until you can’t crew them.”

He stared at me, then nodded, smiling. “What’s going on with you and Greyson? There was an announcement that Greyson was now a free kingdom and you are its ruler.”

I shrugged. “The dark priests invaded, and Claudus wasn’t going to send any help, so I stopped them. Someone has to run things, so for now, that’s me.”

“Oh, is that all? I thought it might have been something complicated,” he said sarcastically.

I shrugged. “I did what I had to do.”

He shook his head. “You always do. What’s next?”

I wiped my mouth and took a swallow of tea. “In the near term, get our trading fleet back up and running. Entice, or recruit people to move to Greyson, especially farmers. Long term, depending on the war—” I looked around, ensuring no one was close “—I plan to build a port on Greyson’s southern shores.”

Wooten frowned, thinking, “I thought that was a rocky coast.”

I nodded. “It is, for the most part, but there is one stretch of beach that’s not. That’s where the dark army landed its forces. I’m going to build a port there and a castle to defend it.”

He shook his head.
